"Michelle, don't walk away from me!"

"Dammit, Jim, if you would stop looking at the past and get a clue about the present!"

Kyle cowered behind the doorway, hoping his parents wouldn't hear him. They were fighting again. But they fought a lot now. He didn't understand what it was about, really, but he knew it had something to do with Grandpa Valenti.

And his dad's voice got quiet. "Michelle, Dad lost his family because he looked at the present. If I want to keep you--"

It was supposed to be family dinner night. But Mom got home late, so dinner wasn't ready when Dad got off duty, and Mom didn't want to go to the Crashdown, because she was "--tired of this stupid little redneck town! No one believes in aliens, Jim! Why can't we just leave? There's nothing here for us!"

"This is our home, Michelle! We both grew up here! It's where our family is..."

And the voices got quiet again--so quiet that Kyle couldn't hear them unless he leaned into the open doorway, and then he'd be seen. But he'd heard enough for one night.

He ran back to his room and hid under his covers. He imagined how it would've gone, if his family still loved each other.

"So, Kyle, how was school today?" His dad would've grinned at him. "Got any new girlfriends yet?"

"No, but I'm sitting next to Liz Parker. And she smiled at me."

His mom would've smiled too. "She's such a nice little girl. You know, I had a crush on her dad when we were in high school?"

And they'd all laugh, like a normal family, and eat spaghetti and garlic bread and salad with Mom's special dressing. If they were a normal family.

Someday, he'd have a normal family. And he'd never make the same mistakes his mom and dad did. He'd live happily ever after like the Parkers or the Evanses, where everyone loved each other.

The End
